Five common mistakes manufacturers make when applying for WRAS Approval

WRAS Approval common mistakes spotted by our experts
If your product comes into contact with UK drinking water, WRAS approval isn’t just a badge of quality, it’s proof that your materials comply with the UK Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999 and the Scottish Water Byelaws.
Yet despite its importance, many manufacturers underestimate the time, detail, and documentation involved. From missing data to poor planning, even small oversights can delay testing or lead to rejected applications.
To help you avoid common pitfalls, our WRAS-recognised laboratory team in Milton Keynes shares five of the most frequent mistakes we see and how to prevent them.
1. Leaving BS 6920 testing too late
One of the biggest misconceptions is that WRAS approval can be completed in a few weeks. In reality, BS 6920 testing (which forms the basis of WRAS approval for non-metallic materials) can take up to 9 weeks, particularly for the microbial growth test. Leaving testing to the last minute can mean your approval lapses, creating costly gaps in product availability.
Tip: Start the testing process at least three months before your current approval expires to stay compliant and avoid disruption.
2. Submitting incomplete or incorrect samples
Each material variation, such as colour, filler content, or manufacturing site, must be tested. Sending incomplete or mixed samples can result in delays or the need for re-testing.
Tip: Before shipping samples, confirm that all variants are included and clearly labelled. Your WRAS-recognised laboratory (like Intertek) can review your submission and ensure it meets BS 6920 requirements.
3. Overlooking changes in manufacturing or raw materials
If you change suppliers, adjust formulations, or move production, your WRAS Approval may no longer be valid. Even minor differences in raw materials can affect odour, flavour, appearance, microbial growth, cytotoxicity, or metal extraction, the five key test areas under BS 6920.
Tip: Re-test whenever there are changes in production or supply. It’s the only way to maintain full compliance and avoid rejected approvals later.
4. Misunderstanding what needs to be tested
WRAS approval applies specifically to non-metallic materials and components that come into contact with drinking water, including rubbers, plastics, coatings, greases, and sealants. Many manufacturers waste time by submitting parts that don’t require testing, while others overlook critical components that do.
Tip: Get clear guidance early. Working with an experienced lab can save weeks by identifying exactly what needs BS 6920 testing and what doesn’t.
5. Not planning for re-Approval
WRAS approvals are valid for 5 years, after which products must be re-approved. Manufacturers often miss renewal reminders, leading to expired certificates and paused sales.
Tip: Set reminders well in advance of expiry dates and plan your re-testing schedule around product availability and market demand.
