Combining field measurements and advanced hydrodynamic modelling to support safer navigation and maritime operations

Cardiff, UK: Intertek, a leading Total Quality Assurance provider to industries worldwide, has been awarded a project by the Port of Milford Haven to update the tidal atlas for the Milford Haven Waterway, one of the UK's most important deep-water ports and energy hubs.

As the UK's largest energy port and one of the busiest waterways, Milford Haven plays a critical role in facilitating commercial shipping, energy imports, marine services and regional economic activity.  Maintaining an accurate understanding of tidal conditions is essential for the safe and efficient movement of vessels operating within the Waterway.

Intertek Metoc will combine existing and newly acquired field measurements with advanced hydrodynamic modelling to deliver an enhanced understanding of tidal currents and water movement throughout the Haven.  In addition to supporting navigational planning and operational decision-making, the outputs will be integrated into ship simulator systems, providing highly realistic environmental conditions for pilot training, vessel manoeuvring studies and future operational assessments.

The project demonstrates the growing role of advanced marine data and digital technologies in supporting modern port operations, and it reflects the Port’s continued commitment to maintaining the highest standards of navigational safety and operational excellence.

David Stubbins, Assistant Harbourmaster at the Port of Milford Haven, said “We are pleased to appoint Intertek Metoc to update our tidal atlases. Their expertise will help us develop a valuable tool that enhances our understanding of tidal conditions and supports future planning, navigation and operational decision-making.”

Dr Paul Evans, Intertek Metoc Principal Consultant and Project Manager for the project, commented “We are delighted to have been selected by the Port of Milford Haven to deliver this important project.  By combining high-quality field measurements with state-of-the-art hydrodynamic modelling, we will deliver an updated tidal atlas that provides a robust and accurate representation of tidal conditions throughout the Milford Haven Waterway.  The integration of model outputs into ship simulator systems will further enhance the value of the project, supporting realistic marine training, operational decision-making, and the safe and efficient navigation for vessels within the Haven.”

Intertek Metoc is a recognised leader in hydrodynamic modelling, with a long track record of delivering a wide variety of marine studies for ports, harbours, offshore renewables, subsea power cables, water industry, and oil & gas.  Among its other specialist services are field survey management, geophysical and geotechnical assessments, metocean assessments, geographical information systems (GIS), as well as cabling engineering and environmental impact assessments.
